A Taste of the Coast in Every Bite

There’s something timeless about a bowl of Peel & Eat Shrimp — fresh, perfectly seasoned, and just messy enough to feel like summer. Whether you're hosting a backyard get-together, planning a seafood night at home, or simply craving a no-fuss appetizer, this recipe delivers bold coastal flavor with minimal prep.

Using Key West Pink Shrimp, known for their sweet, tender meat, you’ll bring Florida flavor to your kitchen in just minutes. Even better? This version skips the beer and instead uses lemon, garlic, and a splash of apple cider vinegar to achieve that perfectly seasoned boil.

What Makes Key West Pink Shrimp So Special?

Key West Pinks are wild-caught off the coast of Florida and are prized for their natural pink hue, clean taste, and plump texture. They’re a favorite among chefs and home cooks alike — and once you try them, you’ll understand why.

Fun Fact:

Peel & Eat Shrimp became popular as a happy hour staple across Florida in the 1960s, especially in beach bars and fish houses. Their shell-on preparation locks in flavor and moisture, making each bite juicy and satisfying.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe:

Quick Cooking: Done in under 15 minutes, including prep.

No Beer Needed: A splash of vinegar brings brightness without overpowering the shrimp.

Make Ahead Friendly: Perfect to prepare a day in advance.

Messy, Fun, Delicious: The ultimate casual appetizer.

Easy Peel & Eat Shrimp Recipe – A Classic Coastal Appetizer

Ingredients

  • 1 lb medium or large Key West Pink Shrimp (frozen, shell-on, defrosted)
  • 3 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 1 lemon, halved and juiced
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • 2 tsp seafood seasoning (Old Bay or Southernmost Blend)
  • Additional seafood seasoning for garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving
  • Cocktail sauce (optional)
  • Ice water for chilling

Directions

    1. Prepare the Boiling Liquid: Fill a large pot halfway with water. Add smashed garlic cloves, the juice of one lemon (plus the squeezed halves), apple cider vinegar, and 2 tsp of seafood seasoning. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat.

    1. Cook the Shrimp: Once the water is boiling, add the shrimp. Cook for about 2 minutes, or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. Do not overcook.

    1. Ice Bath Chill: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked shrimp to a bowl of ice water. Let them sit for 3–5 minutes to stop cooking and firm up the texture.

    1. Drain & Season: Drain the shrimp and place in a serving bowl. Sprinkle a pinch of seafood seasoning over the top for an extra pop of flavor.

    1. Serve: Serve chilled with lemon wedges and cocktail sauce on the side. These are best enjoyed with good company and cold drinks.
